My Research Experience for Teachers is an opportunity that I am very grateful for having this summer. Initially, the idea that I would be able to perform research through Dr. Tolga Kaya’s grant to strengthen my education and professional skills was challenging and exciting. It provided a rare opportunity to apply my knowledge to Dr. Qin Hu’s project and connected a real life experience with classroom practices. My students will benefit from my experience as I incorporate the engineering process into my instruction and prepare for the implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards. Now that my research time is almost completed I am sad to see it end, but am eagerly looking forward to returning next summer. --Lisa Arnold
I learned a lot from this experience in that research is problem-solving and communication. I was extremely fortunate to work with people who were willing to explain things, but also expecting me to contribute to the discussion and overall project. There were days of reading and trying to put pieces to the puzzle together and starting over from scratch but, in the end, it is very rewarding to see that progress was made and that it is going to contribute to future research.
