The Fellowship Programs described below will end in May, 2011. Changes in faculty personnel and administrative considerations do not provide for continuation of this extra-curricular venture under the auspices of C|M|Law.
-----------------------------------------------------------The UDLC sponsors a number of Fellowship programs providing annual stipends instead of academic credit to high-performing students in their second and third year. Fellows commit to a full year of practice under supervision. They work for public and public interest sponsors on a part-time basis, about 15 hours per week.
Housing Court Law Clinic Fellowship
Housing Court Law Fellows represent persons who are subject to criminal prosecution in the Cleveland Municipal Housing Court for violation(s) of Cleveland’s building and housing code, and whose title to the property is impaired because of a legal problem. Clients are referred from the Court for services based on their need for legal assistance which they are unable to afford. The primary goal of this practice is to get the persons responsible for the condition of the property a clear title to it. This may require filing civil cases, probate cases or doing other transactions to resolve title problems. Some owners simply want to give up their title but are unable to do so. This program is in its fourth year.
Detroit-Shoreway Community Development Organization
This Fellowship is starting its second year. Two Fellows work closely with the housing development staff at DSCDO in strategic acquisition of properties. Fellows do research and analysis of selected buildings, negotiate with owners, various lien holders and government agencies, help solve title issues, and provide other similar legal services. Cuyahoga County Land Reutilization Corporation
This Fellowship was added to the UDLC Fellowship lineup in the Summer of 2010. It places two students at the CCLRC, also described as the Cuyahoga County land bank. The CCLRC was formed only a year ago to help return vacant and abandoned properties in Cuyahoga County to productive use. It is currently recognized as one of the most innovative land banks in the nation. Fellows work on a wide range of legal issues confronting the new corporation.
