[2019-April] Senior security engineer at TomTom

posted May 19, 2019, 9:29 AM by Chris Mavrakis   [ updated May 19, 2019, 9:30 AM ]

So, I moved to the security team of TomTom, a company that makes "Location technology for a safer, cleaner, congestion-free world", and I'm loving it!

I get to focus on application security (you know, shifting sec left in SDLC) and cloud security (Microsoft Azure, AWS etc). If you need a buzzword to understand what I'm talking about, here it is: DevSecOps :P.

New certification! This was much more challenging than the basic AWS cloud practitioner, and I'm happy I passed it.

I joined Quby, a Dutch scale-up that builds Toon, an awesome smart thermostat++. Super cool!

My job is about implementing security throughout the software development life cycle (Secure SDLC).
As as security engineer I provide expertise, coaching and guidance to engineering and development teams, build tools and processes to enable Quby to produce a secure product and penetration test all layers, from hardware to cloud and mobile.

After months of intensive training and "trying harder", I passed the Offensive Security Certified Professional (OSCP) exam! The process was tough, so it taught me many valuable skills. I'm very happy I pursued it. Weekends/evenings/vacation well spent!

Here's a e-certificate link in case you don't believe me :P.

Since the beginning of November, I have joined KPMG Netherlands as a consultant. I work in Information Protection Services, doing what one would expect :). I love that all my colleagues live and breathe infosec just like me, and I look forward to contributing to better defended client systems!

[2015 May] IEEE S&P Symposium

posted Jun 5, 2015, 1:10 PM by Chris Mavrakis

(Miraculously) I was awarded the student travel grant by the IEEE Security & Privacy 2015 Symposium committee, to attend the conference at San Jose, California. 4-5 students are typically awarded and it was a great honor to be one of them. Great opportunity, thanks IEEE!

[2015 May] Various scripts

posted May 7, 2015, 8:10 AM by Chris Mavrakis   [ updated May 7, 2015, 8:10 AM ]

Occasionally, I write linux bash scripts to make my life easier. Here are some highlights:

  • bathealth - Shows live info and statistics about a Lenovo Thinkpad battery.
  • batsaver - Helps you prolong the service life of your Lenovo Thinkpad battery pack.
  • myvm - Easily start and stop VMWare services so that they do not drain laptop battery when VMs are not in use.
  • mfwifi - Helps the user easily configure a wireless interface statically. Very effective at solving connection problems at TU/e's Metaforum building. Eventually the university gave up on trying to solve the problems and shoved a few millions to retrofit ethernet plugs. This script effectively sovles the problem though :)
  • XSS Me strings - Default strings plus the ones in OWASP's XSS Filter Evasion Cheat Sheet, to be used with Firefox extension XSSme.
