The Clemson Equestrian Team (CUET) is a Club Sports organization administered under the Club Sports Office of Student Affairs at Clemson University. As such, any member of the Clemson University community is welcome as a member of the club. Club dues are $40 per semester. The primary function of the club is to field Clemson's Intercollegiate Equestrian Team. We compete in the Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association (IHSA) . By IHSA rules, to compete in IHSA shows, an individual must be a full-time undergraduate student at an IHSA member institution. IHSA considers a student to be full-time if he or she is either carrying at least 12 credit hours during the semester or is an official Co-Op student.
The Clemson Equestrian Team has a Hunt Seat section and a Western Pleasure section which was recently added last year to the program. The IHSA has something for everyone-from riders who are just learning to ride to those who have competed in the Medal Finals, done the Jumpers, or gone to the Quarter Horse Worlds. At the beginning of a team member's first semester he or she fills out a form that asks questions about riding, lesson and competitive history which will determine their placement level. As riders win ribbons and points during their IHSA career, they move up through the divisions.
Each rider must do a tryout at the beginning of the year or if you are joining second semester you can try out then as well if a position has opened. There is a spot on the team for everyone even if you do not ride and CUET welcome members throughout the year to participate in other equestrian activities and functions.
In an IHSA Competition, the host school supplies the horses and the tack, so CUET riders need only bring themselves and their show clothes to the shows. The team supplies transportation and majority of the hotel fee. The riders are responsible for their own entry fees (at $25 per class with each rider competing in a maximum of 2 classes per show) and for feeding themselves during the trip. The shows in our Region are all held on weekends. We leave following class on Friday and return Saturday or Sunday night depending on the number and duration of the show(s) that weekend. Riders must travel and stay with the team. Friends and family who would like to come and cheer us on are welcome to show their support!
