World of Asbestos
Partial view of an extraordinary and most impressive display area featuring an unrivaled collection of "museum-quality" asbestos mineral specimens, aptly named: "The World of Asbestos". In the past, asbestos has been promoted as the “magic mineral” and “miracle mineral” due to its very diverse and incredible physical characteristics; itself seeming to exist as a virtual physical paradox: soft, silky fibers…borne of rock. Combine its unparalleled physical versatility with the facts that “asbestos” is relatively easy to mine (it's simply dug straight out of the earth) and it occurs relatively abundant in nature, it's no wonder that asbestos quickly became known as the "miracle mineral" during unprecedented industrial and commercial growth in our nations' collective histories. A great deal has been documented about asbestos, as there are literally volumes upon volumes of seemingly endless information about various aspects of asbestos, including, but not limited to its: very versatile physical properties, historical uses, mining and processing, manufacturing, utilization in thousands of industrial and commercial products, handling & abatement regulations, health effects, medical studies, and modern legal affairs. Entire industries were created dealing with asbestos and many industrial nations relied upon the “benefits” of using thousands of asbestos products. Asbestos was once classified as a “strategic material” and supplies were fought over in World War II. Consequently, asbestos was once touted as one of the world’s most important and vital commodities. Indeed, very few materials (if any) could compare to asbestos on the overall worldwide scale of both its “positive” and negative influences upon human civilization in the past, present, and future; especially in terms of economic, industrial, and human-health impacts on societies across the globe. Over the course of time, hundreds of millions of tons of asbestos will have been traded throughout the world, reaping many tens of billions of dollars in corporate revenues (a significant portion of many countries’ economic growth by any measure). And tragically, over the course of time, tens (if not hundreds) of billions of additional dollars will be spent to cover costs associated with asbestos-related health-care, clean-up, insurance, and legal claims. In human costs, asbestos exposures have injured and claimed hundreds of thousands of lives in the history of its usage and are expected to affect as many for decades to come. To reach such epic proportions, many asbestos-related issues have been largely under-reported and seem to compound the fact that asbestos continues to play an overall detrimental role in the lives of people and the stability of world economies. Some of these inter-related issues include: corporate denials, low profiling of asbestos-related cases and news-stories, continued asbestos marketing, and oftentimes the long latency period of health symptoms. Further, corporate-political connections by elected leaders involved with asbestos manufacturing appear to underscore the complicated nature of failed corporate leadership/policies and lack of corporate accountability in “big business”. Meanwhile, scores of corporate bankruptcies linked to hundreds of thousands of asbestos-related legal claims seem to take the breath away from already struggling companies, tend to overburden our legal system, and erode overall national fiscal strength; while inhaled asbestos itself may literally take the breath away from those it affects on a much more personal level. Yet, despite the magnitude of its relative significance in world affairs, asbestos remains an often misunderstood material and continued potential threat. Mainstream knowledge about asbestos is relatively limited and, though not commonly known, millions of tons of asbestos are still present in our nations’ buildings, utility infrastructure, and may be in building materials and products right under our very noses. Although asbestos is mistakenly believed by many to be completely banned and considered a problem of the past, asbestos (chrysotile and other asbestiform minerals) is still a legal additive in numerous products in the U.S. and many other countries (with exception of a limited number of applications and “new uses”). Even today, thousands of tons of asbestos are still being mined worldwide and currently used in building materials and commercial & consumer products in many countries, including the U.S. Despite being known and used on a limited basis for thousands of years, information about asbestos can still be seemingly as “fuzzy” as the minerals themselves; in this world of asbestos.Day 34/365 -- Quai54
8/22/2011 -- F my life. I'm so friggin' behind on my Project 365 because I've started slacking and being lazy. No bueno. I've gotta pick it up, because the reality of it is that there is someone else out there practicing and trying to be the best at what they do. Talk about ambition! :D Anyways, this is my newest prized pick-up, the Air Jordan V 'Quai54' Retro, which were an international release and did not release here in the United States. Pure dopeness yo'. What I love about this release in comparison to the other anticipated product on Jordan Brands' launch schedule, is these have a much higher level of quality. No glue-stains, clean cut leather panels, respective material proportions, and the over-all mold is much more promising than what I had expected. Definitely a gem!
