CFHT Aluminizing Room
The Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope aluminizing room. This set worked out far better than the previous attempt did. There's only one disjoint, and in the original (a 15000x5000 beast) it's about two pixels high. I'll keep it. Every large telescope on the planet is a reflector design of some sort. So every large telescope involves at least one mirror, typically two (or more). The shiny part of these is a thin layer of metal that's applied to the surface of the mirror. In the case of CFHT and a great many other telescopes, this is high purity aluminum. The only drawback to this is that most metals oxidize and wear. Aluminum is no exception, and after about three years most mirrors need to be re-coated. This is the room where the mirror for the CFH Telescope is re-coated. Toward the back of the room is a large rolling door where the mirror is brought into the room. Just in front of the door is a cart with a mirror cover sitting on it. This is how the mirrors are transported. It rolls on railroad tracks set into the floor, similar to the ones in the foreground. Above the door is a large polar bridge crane. The big hook in the foreground is rotated into position, and the mirrors are lifted off the cart and brought to the wash stand on the right. Once on the wash stand, the mirrors are carefully cleaned, then the old layer of metal is removed using an acidic wash. Once the old metal is off, there is a long process of scrubbing, after which the mirror is just a highly figured and polished piece of glass. No dirt, no old metal, no oils (NO OILS!) Afterward, the mirror cover is lowered back on top of the bare glass once more, and the vacuum chamber on the left side of the room is opened. The lower half of the chamber rolls out on railroad tracks similar to the mirror cart. Once it is open and in position, the bare glass is rotated around using the crane, and it is placed on the cart. Concentricity of the mirror on the cart is important at this step, so there is typically a lot of fine crane work involved to land the glass. Once the glass is on the chamber cart, it is rolled back across the room while attendants are carefully blowing the last remaining dust from its surface. (This room is scrubbed down to fairly coarse cleanroom standards prior to this whole operation, so the amount of dust is minimal.) The chamber is then closed, and the mirror is pumped down to hard vacuum prior to being flashed with aluminum.Aluminium Composite Panel
