Our Director....

Ms. Julie Quinlan (BMus (Hons), HDip)

The Early Years

Julie celebrated twenty five years association with City of Waterford Brass in 2007. Her earliest memories of the band are as a four- year old sitting beside her Dad (Michael) at rehearsals, tidying his music folder! Julie received her first brass lessons (on Baritone) from her Dad. In so doing she became the first female member of City of Waterford Brass, and went on to study Euphonium with Patrick Kennedy and Niall Doyle. As a young performer Julie went on to become a Feis Ceoil medal winner and perform with the Irish Youth Orchestra and the Irish Youth Wind Ensemble. Julie progressed to gain an honours degree in music at Waterford Institute of Technology, followed by a Higher Diploma in Education in Trinity College, Dublin.

Professional Career

It was during her college years that Julie began taking an interest in Conducting and was offered the post of Musical Director of the Band in 1992. Julie was very proud and honoured to be Musical Director for the band's 75th anniversary in 2007. There have been many musical highlights during that time including a concert Tour of Germany in 1997 and competition successes, most recently with an excellent performance and win in the South of Ireland Band Championships. The Band's Christmas Concert in 2005 was another most memorable performance. As well as conducting the band Julie also arranges Church and Choral music for performance with guest choirs including Incaelo (Co.Kildare), De la Salle Choir (Waterford) and Oldham Choral Society (England). Julie currently teaches music in the Waterford Institute of Technology.

Julie is married to John Mernin (Principal Solo Cornet Player with City of Waterford Brass), and they have two children named Daniel and Adam
