City High Marching Season

Welcome to another City High Marching Season! We have been planning all summer and are excited to get started! Band Camp is next week Aug. 6-10th from 8AM-5PM. Meet in the City High School band room each day. If you haven't registered or made a donation please stop by the registration desk first thing on Monday. Students must be registered to attend camp. We will have hard copies of the packet and if you with us to email you one in advance please email me at vermeerk@grps.org and I will get those documents  to you. 

Things to bring to Band Camp
Instrument, Music (we have a 4th Song!!), Pencil, Gym Shoes, Water Bottle, Sunglasses, Hat, Sunscreen, dress appropriate for the weather.

End of an era

As most people know by now, I have now retired from my teaching career. I had a wonderful ride with the City High Middle Band program for the last 15 years, and an overall career of 45 years, teaching in Iowa City, IA, Marana (Tucson), AZ, and Grand Rapids, MI. There have been so many great students and families that I have been fortunate to know and work with, and I thank you all for being part of my life and career.

At this point, this version of the City High Middle Band website will remain at this address and the new director, Ms. Katie Vermeer, will post new information for our City band community. 

I hope everyone has a great summer, and I look forward to continuing to watch and support the band from "the stands." Best wishes to all!

Concert CDs

Our spring concerts were professionally recorded by UDP Recordings. If you would like to order a copy of either the middle or high school spring concert, please download and fill out the form here. Copies are $10 each or $15 for both nights. To get school delivery and save the shipping cost, the order, with payment, must be received by Tuesday, May 29 at school. After Tuesday, you can still place an order, but you will need to add $3 for shipping and the CD will be mailed to your address provided on the form. 
There is also a way to order a digital download from their website, or the CD. Orders from their website can be paid with credit card or PayPal. 

I hope you will consider getting a concert CD, since it will be a wonderful way to have a momento of this final concert of this year.

Marching Band 2018 forms

Here are the forms relating to marching band for the fall 2018 season if you need them. These only apply to students who will be in the high school band program next year. Please fill out the forms and return them to school during the next week if you have not done so already.

Please note that next year's band camp will run from August 6 - 10 from 8 AM to 5 PM at City High School. All of the appropriate paperwork must be signed and returned before the beginning of camp for a student to be allowed to participate. However, this information is needed by the end of the school year to plan for the number of students who will be expected to be part of the marching band.

2018 Spring Band Concerts

Our annual Solo/Ensemble Concert, featuring students from the band, orchestra and choir, will be held Thursday, May 3 at 7 PM in the City Auditorium. The program features students who recently performed at the MSBOA solo/ensemble festival at both the middle and high school levels.

The Middle School Spring Band Concert will be on Wednesday, May 23rd at 7 PM in the City Auditorium. This program will feature the 7th and 8th grade middle school bands.

Our High School Spring Band Awards Concert will be on Thursday, May 24th at 7 PM in the City Auditorium. This program will feature the combined high school 9th & 10th grade concert band, the zero hour concert band, as well as the City Jazz ensemble. Senior awards will also be presented at this concert. 

For both concerts all students need to wear the concert black uniform, and arrive at 6:30 PM to warm up and tune.

The high school program will mark the final performance for Mr. Schroeder, who is retiring from teaching after a 45 year career. Mr. Schroeder has taught in Iowa City Public Schools, the Marana Unified School District (in Tucson, AZ) as well as Grand Rapids Public Schools, including 15 years as the band director at City High Middle School.

Festival Season - March 2018

This year's festival season has a different look and schedule than previous years. This is due to the expansion of our own district GRPS Band Festival, and the fact that we are required to have both middle and high school groups performing at that event. Therefore, three of our band groups will perform at the GRPS Festival at Union High School on March 14, while the other two groups will perform at the MSBOA Festival on March 1 at Grandville High School.

Here is the latest schedule and results (if available).

March 1, MSBOA Festival for the 8th Grade Band (3rd hour) and Zero Hour Band at Grandville
    3rd Hour 8th Grade Band - 9:40 AM - Rating - I (Superior)
    Zero Hour Band - 2:55 PM - Rating - I (Superior)

March 14, GRPS Festival for 7th Grade Band, 2nd Hour Band and 5th Hour Band. We are having the adjudicators at this festival use the standards applied at the MSBOA for the two high school bands.
    2nd Hour Band - 9:00 AM
    5th Hour Band - 11:05 AM
    7th Grade Combined Bands - 1:05 PM

Tonight's Concert Cancelled

The band concert was just cancelled. The make up date is Monday, December 18 at 7 PM.

City Winter Band Concert

This year's City High Middle School Winter Band Concert will take place on Wednesday, December 13 at 7 PM in the City Auditorium. This program will include all of City's bands, grades 7-12.

Students should arrive at 6:30 to warm up and tune. The concert uniform is all-black dress clothes. This is also the uniform that will be used for concerts later in the year.

There is no ticket for admission, but we are accepting donations from any families who would like to help contribute to our annual fundraising effort.

There will be a very brief intermission between the middle school and high school portions of the program.

We are excited to present this program of holiday music to our families and friends, and hope to see you there on December 13.
