What is Communities In Schools?


Communities In Schools is one of the largest national non-profit organizations committed to providing necessary support for at risk students so that they successfully learn, stay in school,and prepare for life.There are over 200 Communities In Schools affiliates across America, serving over 1.2 million young people in 28 states.

Communities in Schools brings caring adults into the schools to address the unmet needs of young people, and provides valuable links between educators and community agencies and organizations.Seventy-five percent of the students served nationally are minority, and ninety percent receive free or reduced lunches under federal government guidelines.

Communities In Schools believes that every child needs and deserves these “Five Basics:”

  • A safe place to learn and grow
  • A healthy start and a healthy future
  • A marketable skill to use upon graduation
  • A chance to give back to peers and community

Communities In Schools has nationally improved the grades and attendance for nearly 85% of the students they serve. 

  • 82% improved attendance
  • 86% had fewer disciplinary incidents
  • 89% improved academic performance
  • 86% were promoted to the next grade
  • 85% of the eligible seniors graduated
  • Only 2% of Communities In Schools students dropped out
