The Communities In Schools Service Model

Communities In Schools of Juneau (CIS of Juneau) is an affiliate of the national dropout prevention program Communities In Schools. CIS of Juneau is active in two local schools. A CIS of Juneau site coordinator at Juneau-Douglas High School (JDHS) works with students who are facing barriers that keep them from succeeding in school. A subject area specialist employed with CIS of Juneau leads a trauma informed care project at JDHS in partnership with Juneau Youth Services. This program was developed to teach at-risk students coping/life skills and stress management practices. Our program also provides support to Dzantiki' Heeni Middle School by funding additional staff time and purchasing food to support early morning study sessions. CIS of Juneau works in these two schools to connect students with in-school and out-of-school supports to help them succeed.

CIS of Juneau provides a team approach to coordinating support services for students. The principals of each school have opened their doors to allow community agencies to provide the most efficient support for young people. S
ervices to students include the following:

  • Tutoring
  • Mentoring
  • Credit Recovery Guidance
  • Career and College Exploration support
CIS of Juneau will measure the success of the program through the following:
  • Improved Attendance
  • Improved Academic Performance
  • Participation in School Activities
  • Participation in Tutoring
  • Increased Promotion Rates
  • Increased Graduation Rates
  • Defined College and Career goals
CIS of Juneau supports Dolly Parton's Imagination Library  and the JUMMP program.
