Research Experience

My research was done in the Materials Science Department of Drexel University.  The main goal of the project was to determine the performance of different materials in supercapacitors.  Typically supercapacitors are made using a combination of activated carbon and carbon black.  The activated carbon has a large surface area and thus it has a great deal of capacitance, but it has poor conductivity.  Carbon black is used as an additive in supercapacitoirs because it is highly conductive, although it has very little capacitance.  Carbon onions are conductive and also have moderate capacitance.  The hypothesis with this project was that carbon onions might outperform carbon black as an additive to activated carbon in supercapacitor production.  See the presentation on this research below.
