What Do You See in the Window? - April 1st Update from Pastor Holowach

The Stained Glass Committee has continued meeting with Andrew Young of Pearl River Glass Studios, and construction will soon begin on the south wall and new window frames for the Nave. Mr. Young is a very talented artist who has studied iconography and the traditions of the church, and we are very excited about the designs that are beginning to take shape.

The design phase has been progressing in stages, moving from very general ideas and sketches to more specific and refined themes and images. The south wall will reflect our Sacramental Theology, depicting those Means of Grace by which we are gathered into the Church and set free from sin and death (Baptism), then guided and nourished along the way by God’s Word and the Holy Supper until we come at last into Paradise and the fullness of Christ’s Benediction for life everlasting.

The north wall will proclaim Jesus as Lord and Savior according to His own Words, “I AM…” as recorded in the Gospel of St. John: “I Am the Bread of Life” (John 6:35), “I Am the Light of the World” (John 8:12), “I Am the Door” (John 10:9), “I Am the Good Shepherd” (John 10:11), “I Am the Resurrection and the Life” (John 11:25), “I Am the Way, the Truth, and the Life” (John 14:6), and “I Am the True Vine” (John 15:5).

As you will see, the windows will be predominantly blue to reinforce the water/Baptismal theme already supported by our blue carpet and "ark-shaped" Nave. The sketches depict the progression from earliest ideas to the more refined settings discussed at our most recent meeting. We also plan to post color pictures of the artwork in the Fellowship Hall for those who may not have access to the internet.

Are you able to identify and match the images with the themes outlined above? Did you notice the parabolic arc motif complimenting the distinctive shape of our Nave running throughout the images? A number of changes have been suggested to the latest drawings, and we will be meeting at 10:00am on Thursday, April 19th at Pearl River Glass Studio to review the changes and offer our feedback. Anyone interested in participating is welcome to come along!

March 22nd Update

Below are two overview sketches provided by Mr. Andrew Young on March 22, 2012.

Pastor and others provided comments and Mr. Young is continuing to work on the design.

These are some of the earlier sketches by Mr. Andrew Young (Pearl River Glass Studios) as he began his design work that we provided comment on earlier.

March 1st Update

We have entered into a contract with Harris Constructors to reconstruct the south wall (the right side of the sanctuary if you are sitting in a pew).

We have also entered into a three part contract with Pearl River Glass Studios (PRGS).

The first part is for PRGS to install new aluminum frame windows with laminated safety glass on both the north and south walls, coordinated with Harris Constructors.  The new windows will have three panes from ceiling to floor.  The frames are special made to install stained glass windows into on the inside and allow for settlement and movement.  The safety glass (same as a car windshield) provides protection for the stained glass windows.

The second part is for PRGS to develop a design for stained glass windows for both walls of the sanctuary.

The third part is for PRGS to fabricate and install the stained glass windows for the south wall of the sanctuary.
