Advent 2018

Prepare the Way of the Lord, make his ways straight.

Luke 3: 4b

People are decorating their houses, and there seem to be blow up Santas everywhere, the local tree lighting and Christmas in the Village are past and the preparations are being made for the decorating of the Church. Individuals, the community, and the Church are all in a state of preparation.

Advent is the season of preparation for the coming of Christ. God started preparing the world for Jesus’ birth thousands of years ago.

When God saw that people were not able to find their way from the darkness of world’s temptations, God provided prophets and messengers to let people know that God had a plan! The prophets foretold Jesus’ coming many centuries before his birth.  That way, people understood that there was hope.  God had not given up on human beings, but would provide a way of salvation.

Advent symbolizes that we wait for the rebirth of hope, just as the prophets did.  We remember that God has a plan for us.  We prepare our hearts, our minds, and our lives for the celebration of Jesus’ birth.  Advent is a time to get ready on the inside so that God’s love can shine through our lives and make a difference on the outside.

Our colour for the Advent season is blue, for hope. On the advent wreath, we light one more candle each week, signifying the growing light of Christ getting closer.

As Christmas gets closer, we prepare as a people for our celebration.

On December 15, we will decorate the church for the Christmas season.  People who wish to put poinsettia in the church in memory of loved ones or in thanksgiving for blessings, can bring the plants in that day, and memorial plants will be acknowledged in the Christmas bulletin.

On December 23, we will share in the Service of Lessons at 10 a.m.  In the service, we will look at the some of the prophetic readings of the Messiah, and some of the gospels of Christ’s birth.

On Christmas Eve, our Services are at 4:30 and 8:00 p.m., and our Christmas Day service is at 9:00 a.m.

May the Lord grant you a safe and holy Christmas season,

Peace in our Lord Jesus Christ,

Rev. Fr. Mark Stacey+
