It was the duty of the trumpeters and singers to make themselves heard in unison in praise and thanksgiving to the Lord, and when the song was raised, with trumpets and cymbals and other musical instruments, in praise to the Lord, ‘For he is good, for his steadfast love endures for ever’, the house, the house of the Lord, was filled with a cloud (NRSV, 2 Chronicles 5:13).

Nata Belkin (cello) and Donald Hunt (chamber organ) will give a concert at Christ Church Cathedral on Saturday, October 4, at 5:00 pm: Antonio Vivaldi, Adagio for cello and organ; Johann Sebastian Bach, Sonata for cello and organ #3.  Free admission/voluntary contribution.


Organ Open House is a regular activity of the annual fall festival of Orgue et couleurs.  Patrick Wedd will be at the tribune to explain the 1980 Karl Wilhelm organ  of Christ Church Cathedral this Sunday, September 28, from 12:30 pm to 2:00 pmClick to learn the schedule for other other organs in the Montreal area.  Click to learn about the free noon-time organ recitals from Monday, September 29, through Friday, October 3.

The Mass setting and the organ voluntaires for this Sunday, September 28, are by Girolamo Frescobaldi.  Click to read about Frescobaldi and listen to Missa sopra l'aria della Monica and the three Masses (Missa della Domenica, Missa degli Apostoli, and Missa della Madonna) that make up Frescobaldi's Fiori Musicali.

Duo Seraphim, inspired by the vision of Isaiah (Isaiah 6), is one of four motets (and a sonata) interspersed by Claudio Montverdi among the psalms of his Vespro della Beata Vergine (1610).  It will be the anthem at evensong this coming Sunday, September 28, for the Feast of                  St. Michael and All Angels. Another version by Juan de Esquivel Barahona will be sung as the introit.

On Thursday, October 16, 2008, Kent Nagano will conduct the Philharmonia Orchestra in Royal Festival Hall, London, in a performance of Olivier Messiaen, La Transfiguration de Notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ.

Sunday Choral Evensong at 4:00 pm at Christ Church Cathedral is broadcast on Radio Ville-Marie (91.3 FM; Sherbrooke area 100.3 FM).  It is  streamed live on the internet.

 Learn about the Karl Wilhelm organ installed in Christ Church Cathedral in 1980.  And if you are interested in other pipe organs in Montreal and around Quebec as well as the organists who play them.


Nina De Sole helps us to understand "What is a Pipe Organ?"  There is also an interesting article in Wikipedia.  A more intensive study of the pipe organ can be found in James Cook's Illustrated Organ History.  And for the curious and even not so young, there is the American Guild of Organists' A Young Person's Guide to the Pipe Organ.
