Oliver Messiaen: Music for Trinity Sunday
Olivier Messiaen, Les Méditations sur le mystère de la Sainte Trinité, performed by Olivier Messiaen himself on the Cavaillé-Coll organ of l'Église de la Trinité, Paris, the organ of which Messiaen was titular for 66 years. Simon Cummings, the young British composer and pianist, has posted this long out-of-print Erato disc for download. Click to go to Cummings' website and to read his comments. Cummins believes that Les Méditations may be the greatest organ piece ever. Click to read Messiaen's ideas on Communicable Language and his own programme notes for the Méditations.
Olivier Messiaen, composed other organ music in praise of the Blessed Trinity as well. The Pièce en trio, No. 1, from the Livre d'orgue, was composed for Trinity Sunday.
