Daily Prayer

Pray without ceasing... (1 Thessalonians 5.17)

Daily Prayer is at the heart of everything we do here at Christ Church. A small group meet at 8.30 am each morning and 5.30 pm each evening to celebrate Morning and Evening Prayer, and throughout the day the building is open for people to find space and silence.

Morning Prayer is normally celebrated in the Lady Chapel at 8.30 am Monday to Friday.

Evening Prayer is normally celebrated in the Lady Chapel at 5.30 pm Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday every week.

Both of these are simple offerings of prayer and praise, with psalms, Bible readings and biblical canticles. Each celebration contains a sustained period of silence.

MUSIC FOR DAILY PRAYER: each morning and evening we sing the Gospel canticle to simple chant - the Benedictus in the morning and the Magnificat in the evening. We have now recorded these simple chants and you can listen to them here.

Please always feel free to come in, light a candle, write a prayer, or simply sit in the silence of the church. If would like us to pray for a particular person or situation, please contact us and we will do this at the Wednesday morning Prayer Group at 9.30 pm, where each week a small group gathers to light candles and pray in silence. Simply email us on christchurch01@btconnect.com.

There are many excellent resources available for daily prayer. At Christ Church we use the form of prayer found in Common Worship: Daily Prayer. This has rapidly become one of the most widely used daily prayer books in the UK. The Liturgy of the Hours is also an excellent and widely used resource.

You can download the full lectionary for the year at the bottom of this page, and for the text of the daily readings we use for Morning and Evening Prayer here, please click Here.

Forms of daily prayer are easily available to pray on line at the Oremus website and the Universalis website. And Pray As You Go is an excellent resource for prayer, providing a ten minute meditation on the daily Bible readings available to download as a podcast or simply to play on your computer.

THE HOUR is an extended time of silence on the first Thursday of each month - click here to find out more.
