Goals and Objectives

My long-term career goal is to serve as a public librarian or academic librarian, specifically in the areas of reference, readers’ services, children’s librarianship, and young adult librarianship.


Educational Goals and Objectives


Goal 1: Acquire an understanding of the theory and founding principles of librarianship.

  • Obj. 1: Adopt the Library Bill of Rights and the ALA Code of Ethics as the standards for my professional service and responsibility.
  • Obj. 2: Develop professional attitudes regarding scholarship, professional ethics, intellectual freedom, intellectual property, and access to information in a democratic society. 
  • Obj. 3: Learn basic cataloging, content management and collection development skills.

Goal 2: Increase awareness and understanding of quality resources for customers of varying age and skill level.

  • Obj. 1: Become familiar with reference resources and readers’ advisory resources in a variety of formats.
  • Obj. 2: Explore and learn about web 2.0 applications.

Goal 3: Build communication and customer relations skills to engage library users and promote the library.

  • Obj. 1: Build presentation skills in order to provide educational programs and story time programs for adults and children.
  • Obj. 2: Learn how to cater to all learning styles with a variety of visual aids and audio resources, and well as hands-on learning activities, as appropriate.
  • Obj. 3: Learn how to design and implement information products and services that respond effectively to changes in an increasingly multicultural, multiethnic, multilingual, and global society.

Goal 4: Develop leadership skills necessary to promote the library within the community.

  • Obj. 1: Participate in student and professional organizations. 
  • Obj. 2: Volunteer for service opportunities and leadership roles within student and professional organizations.
  • Obj. 3: Practice presentation and public speaking skills.
  • Obj. 4: Practice advocating for libraries whenever speaking to family, friends, coworkers and acquaintances.

Professional Goals and Objectives


Goal 1: Advocate for libraries.

  • Obj. 1: Promote library resources by creating and providing bibliographies, reviews, book talks, displays, story time presentations, electronic documents, and other tools and programming. 
  • Obj. 2: Promote library resources and services through blogging and social networking applications.
  • Obj. 3: Advocate for libraries whenever speaking to family, friends, coworkers and acquaintances.

Goal 2: Advocate for library customers.

  • Obj. 1: Advocate for customers’ right to read and access materials and provide for diverse information needs through ethical collection development. 
  • Obj. 2: Foster a welcoming and comfortable library environment by ensuring that collection organization and arrangement facilitates access for all potential customers, including those with special needs. 
  • Obj. 3: Be knowledgeable of the unique and changing needs of child library users, and synthesize theories of child and adolescent learning as I develop library services for this population. 
  • Obj. 4: Engage children in the library by encouraging browsing and questions, connecting children with the resources they need, considering children’s opinions and requests in the development and evaluation of library services, and enabling them to use the library effectively. 
  • Obj. 5: Network with local agencies to provide outreach to underserved populations, promote literacy and reduce the digital divide.
  • Obj. 6: Emphasize customer service in order to cultivate a welcoming and accessible library environment.

Goal 3: Continue to foster and enhance my professional development.

  • Obj. 1: Bridge my background as a grant writer with public librarianship in order to secure funds for valuable library programming.
  • Obj. 2: Take advantage of networking and continuing education opportunities through participation in professional organizations.
  • Obj. 3: Stay informed about current practices, trends, and standards in the field by reading journals, subscribing to professional listservs, reading colleagues’ blogs, attending professional meetings and conferences, and discussing current issues with colleagues. 
  • Obj. 4: Identify resources for continued professional development and lifelong learning.
