wwe_maineventers_2000_2009

I've been tallying who was in the last match on each WWE card from 2000 to 2009 using results from The History of WWE site (which is a great resource, but sometimes a little incomplete for more recent WWE events). While the last match isn't necessarily the "main event", it's what I counted in this circumstance. If there was a dark match, I took the last televised match (adding in dark match results will certainly eliminate a lot of the lower-ranked people). If there were multiple shows being taped in a single event (i.e. RAW / ECW / SUPERSTARS) - I took the RAW main event. I only counted participants in the matches (not people who interfered, acted as managers, etc) and I only counted the winners of rumbles (not the other participants).

By year, here's how it looks:

Using an arbitrary point system (10 points for PPV, 5 points for RAW, 3 points for SMACKDOWN! and 1 point for House Show), here is the totals:

The people in the top 50 with the most points in the least number of matches are:
47. Vince McMahon: 77 points in 16 matches (4.81)
50. Mick Foley: 65 points in 14 matches (4.64)
31. Bill Goldberg: 134 points in 29 matches (4.62)
46. Carlito: 79 points in 18 matches (4.39)

A look at people who were in 200 or more main events
Triple H: 668 events (WON Class of 2005)
John Cena: 525 events
Batista: 416 events
Edge: 410 events
Randy Orton: 409 events
Kurt Angle: 387 events (WON Class of 2004)
the Undertaker: 386 events (WON Class of 2004)
The Big Show: 308 events
Chris Jericho: 301 events (WON Class of 2010)
Kane: 268 events
Chris Benoit: 261 events (WON Class of 2003)
The Rock: 202 events (WON Class of 2007)

So, it's interesting that about half of the WWE main eventers have been inducted in the Wrestling Observer Hall of Fame. In terms of candidate strength for the remaining wrestlers, I would rank them pretty much in the order they're here: Cena, Batista, Edge, Randy Orton, Big Show, Kane. Of the group, Kane's longevity is really remarkable but that's about it. If you include people with over a hundred main event matches, that brings in WON HOFers Rey Mysterio Jr., Shawn Michaels, Eddie Guerrero, Steve Austin and Ric Flair along with JBL, Booker T, Rob Van Dam, Brock Lesnar and Jeff Hardy.

It's not clear whether all of the house shows have the matches listed in the order by which they actually happened - especially the shows that occurred before the website was founded (i.e. 2000-2002). For instance, in Columbia SC and Greensboro NC, the main event was WWF Tag Team Champions Edge & Christian defeated Matt & Jeff Hardy and the Dudley Boyz, which went on after matches like "WWF World Champion Triple H defeated the Big Show" and "The Rock & Chris Jericho defeated Chris Benoit & WWF World Champion Triple H when Rock pinned Benoit with the Rock Bottom". A week earlier (4/15/00), when E&C/Dudleyz/Hardyz were at MSG, they were in the middle of the card with Triple H, Road Dogg, & X-Pac, Rock & the Acolytes headlining. Was this is an example of giving the nod to Hardyz since they were in the Carolinas? Was it just the headliners who wanted to get out of there early? But, to the person who asked, there is an example of Bubba Ray Dudley "main eventing" a show. Also, there are very few "dark matches" listed for the first few years, so there is always the possibility of a shift of how things are being accounted for as you go year by year.

I took a look at how many matches had the same wrestlers involved (whether teaming together or against one another - I didn't sort of teams in the initial file). Here are the most common pairings:
