About Rashed Chowdhury
In the Name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
I was born into a Bangladeshi-Belarusian family in Minsk, Belarus, and moved to Bangladesh with my parents when I was two years old. I spent much of my childhood in Dhaka, often visiting Belarus in the summer. When I was twelve, my family moved to Kuwait, where I stayed until the end of high school.
I did my BA in international relations at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa, in the US, where I met my wife, Katie, whom I married in June 2005.
After graduating in 2003, I worked for a year at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a think-tank located in Washington, D.C., before moving to Montréal to begin my graduate studies.
I got an MA in Islamic studies from McGill in 2007, and am currently researching the history of the Ottoman Empire in the early 20th century. I also have an interest in world history, in particular Indian Ocean World history, as well as the modern politics, history and cultures of the Middle East, South Asia and Central & Eastern Europe.
Outside the academic world, I enjoy reading, travel, music, tea, cooking, movies, philately and learning new languages.
