Just finished reading this article called "What Makes a Good YA Dystopian Novel?" and I thought to myself, "This NEEDS to be shared!" Who doesn't love a good dystopian novel?
For those of you not in the know about dystopia:
a society characterized by human misery, as squalor, oppression, disease, and overcrowding.
an imaginary place where everything is as bad as it can be.
Sounds utterly delightful, doesn't it? Well you'd be right! It TOTALLY IS!!
And... just so you know that according to the article...
A note on definition: while shambling, brain-eating zombies; nuclear holocausts; electromagnetic space pulses that knock out most of the population; or alien invasions all make for compelling reading, they do not necessarily fall into the category of dystopia. Now, if the survivors of those various tragedies form a messed-up society where freedoms are curtailed in order to protect its citizens from imagined future terrible events, then we’re talking dystopia.Yup. Zombies don't technically equal dystopian. Sorry guys.
I don't know what it is, but there's something about a dystopian book to make get me excited and make me happy that I'm living in the here and now.
The article has a list of good YA Dystopias
These are recent books, but there are some older ones that are pretty awesome too. Some that I like are:
Z for Zachariah by Robert O’Brien
