John S. Crandell
John S. Crandell was born in 1884. He became a professor of civil engineering at the University of Illinois in 1926. His research focused on transportation facilities aspects of civil engineering. A collection of papers written between 1932 and 1947 report the findings of his research. The papers included correspondence, mimeographed papers, publications and related materials concerning transportation facilities. The papers detailed his investigations in highway engineering, pavements, joints in concrete pavements, and expansion joints. His papers also concerned the Highway Research Board, American City Planning Institute, American Road Builders’ Association, the Committee on Joints and Concrete Pavements, the Clay Products Association, and state highway departments. His investigations were conducted by a committee composed of staffs of the Department of Civil Engineering as well as the Department of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics along with the Division of Highways and the State of Illinois. He remained a member of the faculty the Department of Civil Engineering until 1951. John S. Crandell died in 1953.
