James J. Doland
James J. Doland was born August 1, 1890 in Denver, Colorado. In 1914, he completed a B.S. in Civil Engineering at the University of Colorado, and went on to earn a M.S. from the University of Illinois in 1932. He was a member of various societies, including Chi Epsilon, Tau Beta Pi, Theta Tau, Sigma Xi and Scabbard and Blade.
He joined the University of Illinois as a faculty member in 1926, and became a full Professor of Civil Engineering eight years later, and a Professor of Hydraulic Engineering in 1947. After 32 years at the University, he retired with the rank of Professor Emeritus of Hydraulic Engineering, having developed hydraulic engineering courses and supervised the design and construction of the University Airport.
He published numerous technical papers, wrote and co-authored three books, and is one-half of the duo after which the Cross-Doland method of analysis of flow in water distribution systems is named. During his life he also served as a Captain in the Corps of Engineers Reserve, the principal engineer for the United States Engineering Department, and president of the Illinois Union Board, amongst other distinguishable achievements. He died December 23, 1960.
