Fred B. Seely
Fred B. Seely was born in Chester, N.Y. He graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute with a B.S. degree in 1907 and obtained his Maters of Science degree from University of Illinois in 1915. He was a professor of engineering and head of the Theoretical and Applied Mechanics department here at the University. He later retired after teaching for 43 years. Currently the Mechanical Science and Engineering Department of the University of Illinois offers the Fred B. Seely Award, a Scholarship named after Seely, which is awarded to entering or current undergraduate students in the Engineering Mechanics program.
He was a member of the American Society for Testing Materials, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Society for Engineering Education, the Tau Beta Phi, Sigma Psi, and Phi Gamma Delta. He was also the author of numerous engineering textbooks such as Advance Mechanics of Material, Analytical Mechanics for Engineers and Resistance of Materials among others. On 1949 he was awarded with the Worcester Reed Warner Medal, which is awarded for outstanding contribution to the permanent literature of engineering, and in 1950 he received the Benjamin Garver Lamme Award of the American Society for Engineering Education ASEE.
