Fazlur R. Khan
Fazlur Rahman Khan was a prominent structural engineer from Bangladesh who is iconic for his contribution to structural systems used in the design of tall buildings and skyscrapers. His portfolio includes monumental high-rises such as the Willis Tower and the John Hancock Centre in downtown Chicago, as well as lesser known structures such as the Hajj Terminal in Saudi Arabia. Due to his unique structural system design, he is considered the father of tubular designs for high-rises. This system designs the building as a hollow cylinder that is cantilevered perpendicular to the ground in order to resist lateral loads. His innovative system that remains fundamental to modern skyscraper construction has lead him to be regarded as the “Einstein of structural engineering” and the Greatest Structural Engineer of the 20th century.
