The quality of food in various temples is just substandard even in the United States: too much oil and sugar, poor quality of vegetables, too few fruit, overcooked vegetables, too much grains; I could go on and on. For this reason, I never ate one meal in a temple; I feared for my safety healthwise. Believe it or not, putting a plate of foodstuffs in front of a picture doesn't miraculously fill it with vitamins and nutrients. Isn't that mind-boggling? I have observed utmost care and dedication during food preparation and distribution in various SAI retreats I have attended in USA . Honoring prasad helps us to develop love of Swami. It purifies the body, helps us to control the tongue, and protects against material contamination. The method of cooking food for Swami’s devotees is also a spiritual activity. There are many rules and regulations concerning cooking as per Swami’s standards. There should be a high standard of cleanliness. Only certain kinds of foodstuffs, which are in the mode of goodness, should be used. These include dairy products, wheat, rice, pulses, fruit, vegetables and sugar. Certain spices like garlic and onions should be avoided. Vegetables and fruits should be fresh. Sometimes the recipe requires vegetables (like eggplant, spinach and tomatoes) to be cooked for a long time to get thick, for Swami's satisfaction. Honoring Prasad does not cause disease. What causes disease is overeating. This comes from anxiety, which comes from offense. If someone wants to be free of disease, he should avoid making offenses, and chanting Baba Bhajans and honoring prasad will help us to avoid offense. Using logic, reasoning and experience (spiritual, material etc) is required to accept knowledge. Knowledge should not be accepted based on blind faith. Just because knowledge is claimed to come from right source does not mean that we should not use our experience, intellect, reasoning etc to verify it. We can misinterpret knowledge from right source and therefore, get ignorance instead of knowledge. Also, source itself may be imperfect. Therefore, verifying knowledge before accepting it is a safer but difficult path. The claims on prasadam should be also be verified in some way instead of accepting them on blind faith. Lord Rama was supposed to take diet of sages when he was banished to forest. That diet was raw fruits and vegetables. Most probably, sages used to eat raw fruits and vegetables. Mainly raw food is in mode of goodness. Fried fatty food etc is either rajasic or tamasic. It is surely not in mode of goodness. Have you observed the notice at the train station that all the workers must see that the wheels of the train are moving? In the matter of prasadam, everyone from the cook to the president to the individual devotee must make sure the prasadam is as opulent as possible while remaining healthy.Christmas Instructions #1
