Chavin Life and Achievements

Chavin de Huantar

Chavin civilization was advanced in many ways. The main example of their architecture was the Chavin de Huantar temple, which is what the civilization was named after when discovered. The Chavin de Huantar is believed to have been constructed around 900BC. It served as a gathering place for people to come together and worship. It has played a large part in discovering what we know of the Chavin culture.

Trade and Agriculture

The Chavin people were able to domesticate animals such as llamas, which were used as pack animals for fiber and meat. The llamas carried heavy loads over hills, helping the Chavin reach their high altitude crops, such as potatoes. They used the meat from these animals for trade, and proved to be a major economic source for the Chavin people. The Chavin also developed an agricultural system to grow crops such as maize on the lowlands. As far as historians know, it was most common for Chavin to be well skilled in agricultural techniques.

There is no inclination of specific gender roles, although it is assumed that women were most responsible for the caring of children, while men withheld the duties of providing food.

Classes: The Elite and Power

The Chavin power was established by the belief of the elite having divine connections.  Shamans derived power and athority from their claim to devine connection. This was important for the community for they wanted to connect with the divine, and they believed the shamans could do that for them. Shamans had great social influence on the Chavin people, and were held in the highest respect
