What's in it for you?

Having taken the time to look at my website you are possibly thinking of counselling as a way forward for you. It can be a rather daunting process if it’s not something you have experienced before, and it takes a lot of courage to get this far and to be considering it.

When you make your first appointment it is with the understanding that you are not in any way committed to on-going therapy. That will only be decided at the end of our first session or you may wish to go away and think about it before you make a decision.

So “what’s in it for you?” At this point you are possibly feeling very unhappy or anxious about something and not thinking you are worth very much. Why should you invest in yourself? Are you really worth the time, effort and money? 

The benefit of having counselling is that it is an opportunity to invest in you, a worthy person. You want to look after yourself but you are not sure how and need help. By coming to see a counsellor and therapist you are investing time in talking about yourself and your difficulties. You are taking the chance to express possibly suppressed, unwanted feelings in a safe environment with someone who is going to listen to you and be empathic and non-judgmental. I will listen to what you are saying but I will also try to hear things you are not expressing and reflect them back to you.

In talking about and exploring your issues in detail it enables you to develop self-awareness and understand yourself at a deeper yet conscious level. The benefit of counselling will give you the strength to deal with life challenges because you are consciously aware of your thoughts and feelings, and not letting them take control of you. How often are you asked something about your feelings or thoughts and your response is “I don’t know”? Counselling helps you to take the time to find out why you think & feel things, so you can understand them. This enables to you to take action and then make good informed choices. You become more aware of yourself and those around you. Any given situation will become more manageable because you have taken the time to invest in yourself through exploring and understanding your issues with my support. In short, you are getting in touch with your reality so life becomes an experience instead of a problem.
