Why Learn the Argentine Tango?

The tango is a passionate and sensual dance. You’ve probably seen it in on TV or in the movies. Often, the tango you see there is not the Argentine tango, but ballroom tango. What’s the difference?
  • The purpose. Like other ballroom dances, ballroom tango is danced with an eye towards exhibition or competition. Routines are tightly choreographed and rehearsed, and may feature crowd-pleasing moves (like the iconic rose-in-the-teeth move). The Argentine tango is a social dance that people learn so they can dance with others in a social setting.
  • The embrace. In the Argentine tango, the dancers’ chests are closer together and the hips are farther apart, while in ballroom tango it’s the opposite.
  • The steps. Because the Argentine tango is a living, breathing dance that’s popular in clubs and dancehalls all over the world, it’s an evolving dance. The steps are not set in stone the way they were in the world of ballroom tango, and new steps appear regularly.
  • The “routine.” The Argentine tango is also a dance of improvisation. There are basic steps, but the dancers must communicate with each other from moment to moment. The leader must learn how to lead effectively, and the follower must learn how to “read” the leader. They do this by staying connected and paying attention to each other very closely. In this way, they are able to create a dance on the fly that fits the music.

And don’t worry, there’s plenty of the sexy stuff in the Argentine tango, too – leg wraps, kicks, and even lifts! It’s a rich dance with so much to offer, you could study it for years and still not be “done.” Come to lessons each week and you’ll see yourself improve, one step at a time.

What is the Charleston Argentine Tango Society?

CATS is a group of people based in Charleston, SC who are passionate about the Argentine tango. In addition to Tuesday night tango lessons and dances, we often hold house milongas (events where people can dance the tango) and have special activities around Spoleto time.

If you’d like to be informed of these events and more, please join our mailing list by contacting one of the members listed below.

I’m In! When? Where? How Much?

7:30 – 8:30 Lesson
8:30 – 9:30 Dance

Lessons are not sequential, so you can drop in whenever you want. Each lesson usually focuses on just a few steps or moves, and students practice them and incorporate them into what they already know. Beginning students will be shown some basic steps and have the opportunity to practice dancing them with a partner.

The dance that follows the lesson is a “free dance,” meaning it’s not structured. Students take turns dancing with each other, so you don’t need to come with a partner.

Tango lessons are held in the aerobics studio at the MUSC Wellness Center in downtown Charleston near MUSC at 45 Courtenay Drive. There is often street parking in the area at that time of night, and there’s also a parking garage across the street. Walk up the steps to the lobby and pay $5 for admission, then ask for directions to the aerobics studio if you’re not familiar with the building.

Hope to see you there!
