Professional Growth Plan 2010-2015

The purpose of this plan is to provide a strategy for advancing in the profession of Public Librarianship.  Long term I hope to locate myself as director/manager of a small public library.  Over the next five years I will attain the following goals to meet this objective.

 

Year 1 (remainder of 2010 and 2011)

Focus through year one is preparing for a new position within the Greensboro Public Library (GPL) system by the end of 2012.  Due to the birth of a son, I am focusing on smaller educational and professional goals.

              Career

·         Maintain and increase committee participation

·         Provide web content

·         Prepare documents (reader’s advisory, procedural brochures, signage) for use at other locations

Professional Organization

·         Join and increase participation in American Library Association (ALA) subcommittee including the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS) and the Public Library Association (PLA)

Continuing Education

·         Spanish

·         Web design

·         Library related workshops

  

Year 2 (2012)

Focus of this year is obtaining and transitioning to new position. Ideally this position will be either a professional or paraprofessional position located at a branch of GPL and provide increased supervisory opportunities.   Additionally, it would preferably include specialization in collection development.

Career

·         Supervise or assist in supervision

·         Maintain and increase committee participation

·         Prepare documents (reader’s advisory, procedural brochures, signage) for use at other locations

·         Assist in training of staff and developing training materials

Professional Organization

·         Increase responsibility in ALA subcommittees —online forum or blog and/or office-holding, attend conference

·         Read current literature and apply to job. Begin to prepare articles from experience with reading and applying

Community Involvement

·         Become involved in a community organization to increase possible partnerships and awareness for the library.

Continuing Education

·         Spanish

·         Library related workshops

 

Year 3 (2013)

Focus of this year shifts outward to advocacy and partnerships within the community. I am shifting from increasing my own visibility within the system to increasing visibility of the library.

                Career

·         Supervise or assist in supervision

·         Maintain and increase committee participation

·         Prepare documents (reader’s advisory, procedural brochures, signage) for use at other locations

·         Assist in training of staff and developing training materials

·         Assist in developing/ continuing programming

Professional Organization

·         Increase responsibility in ALA subcommittees —online forum or blog and/or office-holding, attend conference

·         Look for opportunity for growth such as special partnership, grant, research within ALA or other professional organization

·         Write article and submit for review

Community Involvement

·         continue utilizing community involvement

Continuing Education

·         Spanish

·         Technology (web design or computing software)

·         Library related workshops

 

Year 4 (2014)

Focus of year four is to increase professional standing and prepare for professional supervisory position within GPL.

                Career

·         Supervise or assist in supervision

·         Assist in training of staff and developing training materials

·         Maintain and increase committee participation

·         Prepare documents (reader’s advisory, procedural brochures, signage) for use at other locations

·         Increase programming through partnerships. Should have a number of programs that are “mine.”

Focus of year five is contributing to and strengthening GPL through community involvement, staff development, and resource management.

                Career

·         Promotion to managerial/leadership role

·         More hands on approach to staff development—mentor a colleague, take part in policy decisions, training and development of training materials

·         Maintain and increase committee participation

·         Increase programming through partnerships. Should have a number of programs that are “mine.”

·         Seek out “new” ways of providing  service
