This unique book showcases South African photographer Trevor Appleson's two major contemporary projects: "Beaches" and "Uniforms."

"Beaches" presents portraits taken in the golden light of dusk and dawn on a beach near Cape Town. Beach bums, vendors, gang members, children, and swimmers are all photographed against a black background. Although the subjects are not connected, seen together their images resemble the cast of a Biblical epic, leaving viewers to ponder what is happening off-camera. In "Uniforms," Appleson focuses on people in uniform, with photographs of police, fruit packers, schoolchildren, and security guards reminiscent of Old Master paintings.

Roxy Photo Booth
I was out last night with a few of my FlickrFriends shooting on the Sunset Strip. We were walking by the Roxy and were stopped a by rep from a tequilla company who had a photobooth set up and was offering free pictures. Well, you can't get people from Flickr to say no to getting in front of the camera. It kind of turned into a contest to see who could pose for the silliest/worst picture. Here is my entry.

Paul Strand (Aperture Masters of Photography Series, Number One)
Paul Strand was more than a great artist: he was a discoverer of the true potential of photography as the most dynamic medium of the twentieth century. Purity, elegance, and passion are the hallmarks of Strand's imagery. And this inaugural volume of Aperture's Masters of Photography series presents forty-one of Strand's greatest photographs, drawn from a career that spanned six decades.

Included are his earliest experimental efforts, created from 1915 to 1917, which Alfred Stieglitz declared had begun to redefine the medium. Subsequent photographs reveal the artist's impeccable vision in locales as diverse as New England and the Outer Hebrides, France, and Ghana. During Strand's last years, he concentrated on still lifes and the poignant beauty to be found in his own garden at Orgeval, France.

In an introductory essay, Mark Haworth-Booth, Curator of Photography at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, provides an overview of the artist's life and his enduring contribution.
