Masoor dhal Biryani
One pot meal/vegetarian/ easy cooking skill/South Indian style



Rice (sona Masoori): 1 cup

Masoor dhal (red lentil): ½ cup

Onion: 1 medium- diced

Tomato: 1 medium- diced

Ginger-garlic paste: 1 tsp

Green chilies: 4 num-split in two

Red chilli powder: ½ tsp or 1 tsp

Turmeric: ¼ tsp

Salt: 1 and  1/4 tsp

Water: 2 ¾ cup



Oil: 1 tbsp

Cloves: 2 num

Cinnamon stick: ½ inch


Method In pressure cooker
Rinse the dhal and rice together, until the water comes out clear (3 or 4 times). Keep it aside.

Heat the pressure cooker pan with oil and start with the seasoning:clove and cinnamon

Add the onion once it turns translucent; add the tomato and green chilies, when the oil starts to leave at the side of ur pan. Add the Ginger-garlic paste and fry it few seconds.

Add the chilli powder, turmeric, rice, dhal, water (amount indicated above) and salt.

Mix with a spoon.(You can transfer in the rice cooker at this point )

Close the pressure cooker lid and leave in medium heat until 4 whistles.


Once the pressure is completely released, open and add Ghee if u want or enjoy with raita!
