Our Mission

Our mission is to grow the Birmingham Community garden movement by the preservation, creation and empowerment of gardens through education, promotion and resource sharing. We believe that community gardening can not only help people stretch their food dollar, and improve nutrition, but also improves the overall quality of life in our neighborhoods by reconnecting us to the natural world and building a sense of community. These community gardens beautify and transform vacant city lots into vibrant  centers of community activity.
Our purpose is to increase sustainable urban food production and community involvement by:
  • Teaching people how to grow food, and where their food comes from
  • Locating, securing and increasing access to gardening resources
  • Strengthening communication and collaboration within the gardening community
  • Generate support by regular outreach to the general public

Identity Statement
The CGC is a non-profit volunteer organization whose goal is to provide resources for community members to grow food in environmentally sustainable ways in order to foster solidarity and make locally grown, high quality food available to all.
