Using genomic distances to delineate fungal species. The calculation of genomic distance by simple and easy to use tools Mash and Dashing is a powerful approach for delineating fungal species.

Population genomics. Genome sequencing of several strains of the same species can provide us with much deeper insights into the species genomics compared to sequencing a single genome: the amount of recombination and evidence of sexual reproduction in supposedly asexual species, to name just one example.

Fungal opportunism and extremotolerance are found in the same phylogenetic lineages and the co-occurrence is statistically significant. Also, apart from the ability to grow at 37 °C there appear to be few if any traits distinguishing fungal opportunists from non-pathogenic species.
