2014 Candidate Endorsements

Many folks are asking if CFRD is endorsing anyone for the Cypress City Council and/or School Board:

Cypress City Council – Three Vacancies:

To date, CFRD has fully vetted Jay Sondhi and supports him for the Cypress City Council.  A group of people met with Jay Sondhi and he demonstrated strong support for listening to the voice of the residents.  He is not taking funds from any special interests and is self funding his campaign. He strongly opposes Q & R and believes there is a better plan.

The Candidate Statements are attached for all Council Candidates with the exception of Mike Schoppman who did not submit one to the OC Registrar of Voters.  The Candidate Statement Mike Schoppman submitted to the OC Breeze is attached.

Candidates’ Position on Measures Q and R:

Opposed to Q & R: Jay Sondhi, Mike Schoppman

Supports Q & R: Stacy Berry, Paulo Morales, Jon Peat, Larry Smith

Undecided on Q & R: Nancy Kyllingstad

Cypress School Board – Three Vacancies:

To date, CFRD has fully vetted Lydia Sondhi and supports her for the Cypress School Board.

The Candidate Statements are attached for all Cypress School District with the exception of Valeri Peters-Wagner who did not submit one to the OC Registrar of Voters.

Candidates’ Position on Measures Q and R:

Opposed to Q & R: Lydia Sondhi

Supports Q & R: Steve Blount, and Valeri Peters-Wagner, Sandra Lee

Steve Blount and Valeri Peters-Wagner are incumbents and seeking re-election.  Given that they are two of the Board members fully responsible for the exorbitant debt and the closure of our schools, CFRD does not support voting for the incumbents.   In a recent article in the Event News, Ms. Peters-Wagner states that she fully understood the bond documents that created the debt we are now all burdened with and she only signed the documents because that is what the voters wanted.  I have not talked to any resident that thought the bonds they approved for school renovation would cost $210 million to repay $41 million or that 3 schools would be closed.  As the President of the School Board, Ms. Peters-Wagner should have known the residents well enough such that she should have at least asked us if we would have been supportive of these bonds under those terms.

As such, for the School Board, CFRD endorses Lydia Sondhi.   The main benefit in voting for Sandra Lee is that it is a vote against the incumbents and since she doesn’t have an investment in the past activities of the School Board, she may be open to the voice of the residents.

Over the next week, CFRD is looking further into the other City Council candidates to see where CFRD might lean.

Respectfully,

Steven Mauss
