DENTAL BRIDGE

For the best results - bridges should be made by certified dentists - endodontists, oral surgeons, prosthodontists, endodontists, orthodontists or maxillofacial specialists. If visiting a developing nation such as Mexico or Thailand etc. the best quality bridges will be made by Board Certified Dentists not un-certified general dentists.

  • A good dental bridge can last 10-20 years depending on one’s oral habits. Made right they are comfortable and unnoticeable in your everyday life and when eating. They are a fine, less-expensive alternative to dental implants.

  • Dental bridges literally bridge the gap created by one or more missing teeth. A bridge is made up of two or more crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap -- these two or more anchoring teeth are called abutment teeth -- and a false tooth/teeth in between.

  • These false teeth are called pontics and can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials. Dental bridges are supported by natural teeth (abutments) or implants.

What can go wrong?

  • Poorly made or fitted bridges can cause irritation and infections, poor materials lead to broken bridges. Un-properly trained dentists may use inexpensive, poor adhesives, mis-match tooth colors, or if secured with implants - use improper procedures causing the work to need redoing by specialists.  With a board certified dentist - you get the best work for the same price.

Cost of Dental Bridges

  • Good Dental bridges cost from $395 to $595 per unit in developing countries by certified dentists depending on the dental clinic - (upscale area or not), number of units, materials used and other variables.
  • Cost of dental bridges vs. implants - dental implants cost 4 to 6 times as much per unit as the above per unit bridge prices.
  • When calculating the cost of a bridge one should include the anchor teeth in the unit cost. i.e. in the photo above 2 teeth are missing so a 4-unit bridge will be required.

Dental Bridge Pros and Cons
  • A dental bridge made by a certified dentist can last 10 - 20 years depending on one's oral habits.
  • Disadvantages - infections can occur if one does not brush regularly, use oral rinses and get routine cleanings at a clinic.
  • Can break or come loose due to poor adhesives, trauma, damaging oral habits, aging oral structure.
  • A well made bridge will give good, comfortable service comparable to dental implants without the cost or surgery.
