~ Monopoly - Lesson Plan

BRIEF OVERVIEW:  This lesson plan uses the game of monopoly to help students learn about data collection, probability and Excel.  It is designed for an 8th grade Algebra course.  Students play Monopoly for 3-4 class periods.  During this time they keep tally marks on the spaces they’ve landed on.  At the end of these days they students total all of their landings.

Using this information the students will create graphs & charts in Excel.  They are given step-by-step directions on how to do this, but the lesson could be taught directly as well.  Once this is complete the class will discuss the results they’ve gotten and compare them to the official results that the teacher has.  To complete the activity the students will complete a type 2 writing assignment.

CONNECTING TO THE THEME:  This activity is a group activity.  Once the game is complete the group members will share the total results with each other.  Though I did not design it this way, the students could work on their charts together as well.  To create a "whole class" graph that includes all of the groups' data together,  the teacher could set up the Excel sheet and use the SmartBoard to have students enter information.  Then, the class could create a chart and see how the entire class put together compares with the official results.

ADDITIONAL INFO:  I would like to give credit to the source of the "official" information for this activity.  Though I know the colleague I received it from, neither one of us remember where we found it to begin with.  I am really sorry, but I'm not able to give you a good resource on this.
