Biography

I have graduated in Biology from the University of Lisbon (1990) and received the PhD in Biotechnology from the University of Algarve (2004). My domain of specialization is molecular biology and plant biotechnology: in vitro cell culture; genetic manipulation of plant cells; PCR; qRT-PCR; RACE-PCR; cloning procedures; primer design; Southern, Northern and Western blot analysis; phylogenetic analysis; siRNA detection.

Currently, the research lines in development are:
  • Interaction of Citrus tristeza Virus (CTV from Closterovirus family) suppressor genes with the post-transcriptional gene silencing mechanism (PTGS) in the model plant Nicotiana benthamiana. The graft delivery of protecting signals to trigger resistance against closteroviruses is also under investigation.
  • Cloning of terpene synthases with pharmacological interest from Thymus albicans, and heterologous expression.
  • Recent interests are the development of biosensors for the early detection of plants infected with pathogens by using integrated optical devices.
