How far are you willing to go for a cause? Simply donate a few dollars or wear a t-shirt? Is there a cause so important to you that you would be willing to shave your head to raise awareness for it? For Zoe Naylor, a freshman member of the cross country team, there is. I talked with her about her decision to shave her head on St. Patrick’s Day.
So, you're shaving your head.
Zoe: Yes, I'm shaving my head.
What's it for? It's a bit early for Halloween.
Zoe: It’s for St. Baldrick’s, and the local event is called Bald in the Boro. It's an organization that raises money for children's cancer research.
How did you hear about St. Baldrick’s?
Zoe: I saw a couple of my friends in middle school doing it,and my aunt had cancer when she was younger so I wanted to show solidarity and support the cause.
Is this your first time participating in Bald in the Boro?
Zoe: Yes, it’s my first time doing it. My parents are excited for me, but they're a little nervous because they don't know what I'm going to look like afterwards. I was nervous, but now I'm excited and I want to get a really cool beanie. Eighth graders Graham Hall and Isaac Harrison are also doing it. My hair won’t be donated after I shave it.
I asked her if this now gives her an excuse to dress up as Eleven from Stranger Things, and she said yes, so don’t be surprised if she’s walking around with Eggo waffles after St. Patrick’s Day. If you want to help Zoe fundraise, go to her Twitter (@zonaylor) and a link to her donation portal is in a pinned tweet. Stay tuned for a follow up article about her experience at the event after her hair is gone!
