This year, Central welcomed a new librarian to the family. Here's everything you need to know about Ms. May:
Are you new to this area?
So, I am originally from here. I went to Page in Franklin for high school, and I went to UT Knoxville for undergrad. I started grad school immediately after that, so I lived in Knoxville for 8 years. After grad school, I got my job in Knoxville, and I worked there for two years. This summer, I actually moved back, and that’s when I got this job.
How long have you been a librarian?
This is my third year.
What was the last school that you worked at?
I worked at a school called Central High School in Knoxville, so in Knox County.
Have you ever had any other jobs?
No, that was actually my first job out of grad school.
What were your first impressions of Central? Is it a lot different from other schools?
It’s pretty different. I really like it so far. Everybody has been very friendly and welcoming. I love how willing all of the students are to talk to me and get to know me, so it’s been really fun. The library is the place to be! I’ve noticed that, and I really like that about here.
Have you always loved reading?
Yes, I have always been a big reader since I was really young, and I have always really liked it. I would go to dinner with my parents and have a book out while they were eating. During high school, I still read, but just not quite as much because there were so many required readings for classes. In college, I kind of felt the same way, and then during grad school, when I started studying to be a librarian, I really got back into it and started reading a book every few days. That’s how I’ve been since then!
What’s your favorite genre of books?
I like reading realistic fiction a lot. That’s what I typically read.
Finally, what books would you recommend?
I have this whole shelf of my favorites in the library, where you can come look at them, but I would say that my favorite book that I’ve read in the past year is called I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson.
