As some of you may know, the National Association of Secondary School Principals named our very own Dr. Ash the 2014 Tennessee State Middle School Principal of the Year. It was my great privilege that last Monday I got the chance to sit down with our lovably reticent leader and figurehead to discuss his award. I bring you here the exclusive interview with the state of Tennessee’s principal, Dr. John Ash.
Can you tell me a little bit about the process through which you were selected?
“Well, you apply through a series of questionnaires - it is the National Association for Secondary School Principals – and they choose one at each level. And then you go to Washington D.C.”
How big is the applicant pool for that?
“There’s probably six- or eight- hundred people in the organization, but I don’t know how many chose to apply.”
Does it feel good to have won?
“I mean… I feel like we have a great set of teachers here and great students and they make everything go.”
How long did the process take?
“Probably a month.”
So there you have it. Make sure to give him a congratulatory hug if you see him in the hallway. He’s definitely a hug guy as well as the best middle school principal in Tennessee.
