The following restaurants and markets have been chosen either because they have a gluten free menu available, or because some of our members found gluten free options in their menus. Central Coast Celiacs makes every attempt to identify restaurants that are safe for celiacs. However, cross-contamination associated with eating at restaurants need to be considered at all times, and we encourage you to discuss your dietary condition with THE MANAGER and your waitperson every time you place an order.
In restaurants, several factors can change for many reasons. The chef, owners, and management staff may change. Manufacturers of the commercial foods they use could change the formulation at any time, without notice. Asking about oils and other products that might have been used to cook gluten previously, such as boiling water to cook pastas, etc. is always wise. Please be aware of these risks and ask questions to ensure appropriate safe food preparation procedures every time you visit a restaurant – regardless of how many times you have been there before. We highly recommend communication in a courteous manner with the waitperson AND the manager. Sometimes, it may be best to speak to the chef or cook.
Central Coast Celiacs can’t guarantee that the information listed below is always accurate or complete. Unfortunately, there may be some disappointments when dining out, no matter where we go. We are not responsible for any errors or omissions, or for the results obtained from any outcome relating to the use of restaurants listed below.
Our website may contain links to other websites. We make no representations, guarantees or promises regarding these other sites, which are not controlled by or affiliated with Central Coast Celiacs. Central Coast Celiacs does not benefit from recommending any products or entities listed on our site, and the mentioning of any person, organization, or business does not mean they are satisfactory, or unsatisfactory.
No recommendation is intended to replace the advice of your personal physician familiar with CD/DH. Any activity you undertake should be based on a number of factors, including, but not limited to, your personal health history, personal consultation with your M.D., and your own due diligence with respect to any products, services, or information.
Though Celiac Disease is not caused by an allergy (it is an autoimmune disorder), we recommend everyone to watch these restaurant service training videos. Thank You!

Also, some Japanese restaurants may add wheat starch and an Asian vinegar that sometimes contains malt or wheat (vinegar is safe, expect malt vinegar) to sushi rice to make it sticky (as far as we know, Sushiya doesn't, but other cities/countries may). Please ask these questions every time. Chefs and cooks may change without notice and some may adopt different practices in the kitchen. If you are hungry, order more than one meal. $$$

WHEN EATING OUT, PLEASE REMEMBER TO THANK YOUR SERVER, CHEF, RESTAURANT OWNER, AND ANYONE ELSE WHO HAS OFFERED ASSISTANCE. THIS MAY HELP US BUILD A BETTER RELATIONSHIP WITH THE RESTAURANT. POPULAR DEMAND FROM REPEATED CELIAC PATRONS MAY LEAD TO THE RESTAURANT’S OWN DESIRE TO DEVELOP A GLUTEN-FREE MENU AND MORE. THIS WILL HELP THE ENTIRE CELIAC COMMUNITY.
Other Tips: Even a small crumb may trigger an autoimmune reaction. The majority of gluten-related accidents happen when your meal is being delivered to your table. To help minimize accidents, we recommend that the same person who took your order deliver your GF meal to your table. This will prevent a well intentioned co-worker to accidently switch your order or add something to your order that was intentionally left out, and that others may consider missing; i.e. In good faith, a waiter you haven't spoken to may conclude that "The cookie that always goes in the icecream is not included: my co-worker must have forgotten". A trusting celiac may assume that the cookie is gluten free and ask no further questions. Please consider these scenarios. It is our health!
When a meal is brought to your table and it is clearly not gluten free, we recommend that you keep the plate in your table until your gluten free meal is remade from scratch. For example, your waiter can take the "hamburger in the bun" back to the kitchen when your new hamburger comes the way you requested it. Better safe than sorry.
Finally, even with the best intentions at heart, accidents do happen and in such cases, we should remember that to err is human. However, if mistakes are not corrected and mistakes continue to be made, please let us know. Usually, if we hear from more than one member that a place is not safe, we would be glad to remove the restaurant from our list.
