Harrisburg Negro Cemetery

By George E. Wolf Jr. 1985-2009

Was also called the Lodge Loving Band of Hope Cemetery. Other names were Harrisburg Colored Cemetery, also Collins Cemetery. Ca.1883-1953. Located near the corner of Fennell street, beside Lawndale and near the end of Bowie street. Railroad tracks run behind the cemetery. This cemetery is in such bad disrepair, it is beyond restoring. (See update.)
Stones are broken and are lying here and there, not even in their proper place's. The wood's in which the cemetery rest is a jungle with swampy mud and trash.
There are alot of unknown graves, never to be found again.
I really feel for those souls who will be forgotten forever........
Black cemetery. Many buried here were former slaves.

Younger sister city of Harrisburg Pennsylvania established 1826 by John
Richardson Harris, who first settled there in 1823, on the bank of Buffalo
Bayou. At one time its own municipality with James S. Deady as it's last
mayor, Harrisburg was annexed by the city of Houston in 1926. Harrisburg
served as the capital of the Republic of Texas until April 16, 1863, when
Santa Anna burned the entire town except for the residence of John W. Moore.
Incorporated in 1837 and part of Common School District Number 20, then the
Harrisburg ISD, annexed by Houston ISD in 1927.

Black. 7800 Bowie. abt 1883 to 1940. Abuts and is indistiguishable from
Jackson Cemetery. PRIOR family plot originally with wrought iron fence which
is now missing. At one time there was a church that occupied a lot that is now
considered a part of the cemetery by the Harris County Appraisal
District. The only remnance of the church is a concrete slab.

Black. 7800 Dahlia. abt 1900. Abuts and is indistiguishable from
Harrisburg Cemetery. Not-yet-verified informaton from a reliable source
has told me that even though this cemetery's is documented the Jackson
family did not actually hold the rights to put a cemetery on the property.

Houston Post article was written about the Harrisburg-Jackson Cemetery
