In many instances, specific information about dates of birth and death can only be obtained through cemetery records and/or inscriptions on markers and monuments. While death is never a pleasant topic of conversation, its context in genealogical research is fascinating, and for some, a hobby unto itself.
One aspect of family history research is the frustration encountered by the lack of tangible artifacts. A lucky few may have old photos dating back to the early 1800's or maybe even an heirloom or family bible. In most cases, however, we have nothing except a brief mention in courthouse records. Headstones give us that one thing we can see with our own eyes and touch with our own fingers. They even give us the opportunity to contemplate the lives of our ancestors and our own mortality.
Presented here are photographs of headstones for a number of ancestors and others related by marriage. If you have photos of your own for those not listed and are willing to contribute digital copies for publication here, please contact me at email@example.com.
