Beginner's Course details

Each book comes with dozens of audio files to help you make real progress and get you ready for playing with other musicians!
Whether complete beginner or more experienced player, this three-part series will help you to make steady progress in learning to play the music of these islands.

Level 1  Complete Beginner

This course is designed to introduce complete beginners to the mandolin.  Detailed tutorials and resources will help you to learn to play some simple Scottish and Irish music.  The most valuable aspect of this course is the opportunity to learn by playing along with the exercise files.  Then, when you are ready, you can try to play with the two full, accompanied versions of the tunes.  Tried and tested on my own students, this course will give you a good start to learning the mandolin.

Level 2  Get the Rhythm

This course is designed to introduce you to the rhythmic style of Irish and Scottish music. I believe that if you ‘get’ the rhythm of this music you will eventually find more challenging tunes much easier to learn.  None of the ten tunes we will be working on include tricky fingering or fancy triplets and decorations so you won’t be distracted by too many details.

Level 3  Getting into the Details

This course, the third in the Introduction to Celtic Mandolin series, will help you to get started with adding embellishments such as triplets and rolls to your tunes. Mandolin decorations aren’t exactly like those of the fiddle or even the tenor banjo - so it’s good to avoid the common mistake of trying to copy the styles of those other instruments.  This course is a gentle introduction to the next level where you can learn to add more complex decorations.
