The CEDC is an IRS affiliated VITA (Volunteers in Tax Assistance) site providing free electronic tax filing to low and moderate income residents with targeted outreach to working families, micro businesses and seniors who are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit or the state Se In order to reach a greater population we have completed many off-site satellite locations for tax preparation including, the Immigrants Assistance Center, UMass Dartmouth, the Warfinger Building and Varid ares Kiche on Acushnet Avenue. February to April 2011, we filed 1250 tax returns and recovered over $1.75 million in tax refunds and $530,000 in Earned Income Tax Credits. Since the IRS does not offer walk-in service in New Bedford, we have also become the "go to" place after tax season to provide a range of tax assistance services year-round. CEDC is also a Certifying Acceptance Agent for the Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) to enable individual who do not qualify for a Social Security Number to file state and federal tax returns.
In conjunction with the VITA program CEDC offers Assistance in applying for Masshealth and SNAP as well as other programs using the Virtual Gateway. This allows one stop tax preperation and applications for clients who may not know they qualify for goverment assistance.
The CEDC will also be having workshops on financial literacy that focus on women and families. These workshops will touch on banking, budgeting, credit, and savings.
