FRENCH I – Honors

1 World Language Credit

Prerequisite: 

Must pass English 8 class with a C or higher or pass English 8 Reading/Writing SOL

This rigorous course is an accelerated introductory high school credit course in the French language and culture.  Emphasis is placed on listening comprehension, speaking skills, reading comprehension, and effective written communication at the beginning level.

French II-Honors

1 World Language Credit

Prerequisite: 

High level of achievement in French I-Honors

This course is taught almost entirely in French. Authentic reading and listening materials from the Francophone world serve as models for building idiomatic vocabulary usage.   Students will focus on interpersonal speaking, reading, and writing skills, and deepen their understanding of French and francophone culture.

LATIN I – Honors

1 World Language Credit

Prerequisite: 

Must pass English 8 class with a C or higher or pass English 8 Reading/Writing SOL

An introduction to the Latin language and Roman culture. By reading about the lives of the Cornelii family, the students will begin to learn the Latin language, and study the culture, literature, and geography of Roman civilization. Students will cement English grammar concepts through the study of Latin grammar. Students will increase their English vocabulary through the study of English derivations of Latin words..

Latin II-Honors

1 World Language Credit

Prerequisite:

Latin I Honors or Equivalent

Students continue to broaden their understanding of the Latin language through reading about the everyday lives of the Cornelii family.  There is a continued emphasis on reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, culture, and geography. Students continue to add to their knowledge of English by learning English derivations of Latin words, and comparing grammar concepts.

Prerequisite:                  Intermediate Spanish and/or teacher recommendation

This course is part I of an introductory high school credit course in the Spanish language and culture.  Emphasis is placed on listening comprehension, speaking skills, reading comprehension, and effective written communication at the beginning level.

Prerequisite:                  Spanish I, Part I and teacher recommendation

This course is part II of an introductory high school credit course in the Spanish language and culture.  Emphasis is placed on listening comprehension, speaking skills, reading comprehension, and effective written communication at the beginning level.

Prerequisite:                  Completion of Spanish I and teacher recommendation

This course is taught predominately in Spanish with limited English instruction. Focus is on the continued development of vocabulary and listening skills, as well as discussion, reading and writing proficiency. The study of the history of the Hispanic world and literature is included in the target language.

Students continue to refine skills acquired in the first year course. Increased emphasis is placed on reading, writing and grammar. The study of grammar continues. Students study Hispanic history and culture throughout the year.
