January 12, 2018:  Chasing Coral
Chasing Coral - Coral reefs around the world are vanishing at an unprecedented rate. A team of divers, photographers and scientists set out on a thrilling ocean adventure to discover why and to reveal the underwater mystery to the world. ~ imdb

(Age 9+, 5 stars) "The reefs are the movie's true stars: We get to see their brilliant colors, their amazing interdependence with other sea creatures, and the desperate measures the coral takes to fight for life. But the commitment, ingenuity, and passion of the humans involved in both filming and saving the coral are part of a separate, equally valuable tale....Filled with facts, well-presented, and beautifully photographed, and with an ending that inspires optimism, this film is highly recommended for family viewing."  ~ commonsensemedia

January 19, 2018:  Before the Flood

Before the Flood - Featuring Leonardo DiCaprio's look at how climate change affects our environment and what society can do to prevent the demise of endangered species, ecosystems and native communities across the planet ~ imdb

(Age 10+, 4 Stars)  "A documentary about Earth's climate crisis. It follows U.N. Messenger of Peace Leonardo DiCaprio as he travels the world, looking into various problems and possible solutions. The movie offers quite a bit of information that's both alarming and hopeful. DiCaprio is portrayed as an empathetic, curious role model who's helping to lead the world in the fight to save the future. Expect some disturbing imagery related to the planet's possible future; discussions of what could happen -- and is already happening -- to the planet could upset younger viewers. There's also a bit of strong language" ~ commonsensemedia

February 2, 2018:  Merchants of Doubt

Merchants of Doubt - A look at the pundits-for-hire who present themselves as scientific authorities on topics like tobacco, the ozone hole, pharmaceuticals and climate change, as profits are put ahead of proven health and environmental concerns ~ imdb

(Age 13+, 4 Stars)  "A documentary about the use of deception and deflection to cast doubt on issues that are scientifically sound. It begins with the tobacco industry -- which long ago convinced people it was OK to smoke -- and moves up to the more current climate crisis. The main content issue is language.... A thought-provoking film for both teens and adults, addressing the idea that not everything presented in the media is entirely true; it's important to recognize that deception exists and that it's possible to see beyond it." ~ commonsensemedia
