Robert’s Path to Cawdor with Croy and Dalcross

For the last seven years, Robert has been minister of the Argyll parishes of Kilchrenan and Dalavich linked with Muckairn. His manse is in Taynuilt. He is very actively involved in the local communities. An important part of his ministry is visiting not only members of his congregations but also those who are not directly attached to the church. He is also heavily involved ecumenically with other local churches of all denominations to break down the barriers of stigma and reinforce friendship among God’s people.

In the first eleven years of his working life, Robert trained and worked as a chef and in hotel management. However, he was laid very low by cancer which required major chemotherapy and lengthy convalescence. This gave him considerable personal insight into the experience of illness which has proved very helpful in his subsequent pastoral work. As he recovered he took on temporary and then full-time work as a postman in a rural area. This job made him realise that supporting lonely or ill people was a “ministry” to others and helped him develop a clear sense of the need for people to have somebody to walk alongside them in a friendly way while respecting their privacy. Thank God, Robert’s cancer has never returned.

In 2002 Robert began studying for a Bachelor of Divinity (Hons) at Aberdeen University. During his studies and following his graduation, he enjoyed a wide range of practical placements in a range of churches as well as in chaplaincy at Raigmore Hospital and New Craig’s Mental Health Unit.

2009 saw Robert ordained and inducted into his current charge. From the references we have received it is clear that Robert is loved by all and shall be sorely missed throughout the community. It will be a great wrench for him to leave his friends in Argyll but it is so much to our benefit that he feels so strongly called by his Lord to return to his beloved highlands and become our pastor. He is happy also to occupy the manse with his cocker spaniels until such time as we can bring to fruition our sessions’ decision to build or buy a house which is more practical and more easily maintained and heated.

Robert’s interests include gardening, travelling, cooking, photography and playing bowls! (Orach is the golden spaniel (10 months) and  Reba the seven year old black working spaniel)
