Welcome to the Ceramicrafters' Club web site. We are glad you are visiting! If you would like to see our studio, we are in Clubhouse II at 3300 N. Leisure World Blvd., Silver Spring, MD, 20906. The studio is open Tuesday and Thursday afternoons...and whenever a member is working. We can be reached by phone at (301) 598-1320.
The Ceramicrafters' Club was organized in 1968. The studio was located in Clubhouse I, had two kilns and about 100 members...who had to schedule their times in the studio! These Leisure World crafters made both ceramic and porcelain items, however porcelains are no longer done. When ceramicrafting was popular throughout the region, some of the club members traveled to shows in Maryland and Pennsylvania...and won prizes! In 2006 the studio was moved to Clubhouse II, our current location. The studio is larger and accommodates 4 kilns...and members can come work whenever Clubhouse II is open.
The technique used by our ceramicrafters is called slipcasting. In this method, a liquid clay is poured into a plaster mold. After a short period of time, some of the water is absorbed from the slip into the mold and a shell of clay forms inside the mold. The extra slip is then poured out and the piece continues to dry in the mold for a few hours. Then the mold can be opened and the piece removed. The piece must then be trimmed and cleaned and left to air dry further before going into the kiln.
Club membership is open to all residents of Leisure World and a few members from nearby communities. Membership dues are currently $10 a year plus $5 a year if you want a locker in the studio. Your initial fee includes lessons on how to make, clean, paint and glaze an item. If you think you might be interested, stop by and watch us work...and visit with other members!
