Looking at Art through Roman Eyes: Collecting Art in the Late Roman Era

What did Romans from this period collect and why? Dr. Beckmann has excavated throughout the Mediterranean, with primary interests in museum collections and provenance-based studies. Her current research looks at the reception of antiques in the later Roman period — how and why these people were collecting antique sculptures and art in their home, what they saw in antique objects, and what values or message these objects carried for later generations of Romans. As an archaeologist, she is focused on observing the context in which an object or work of art is found, in order to properly interpret its meaning, then and now.

10:50 break

Ms. Davis will provide resources, lead a discussion of the new Getty Villa gallery arrangements, and lead small group activities in modeling how to discuss art pieces in order to learn from them, especially with students.

Mercedes Barletta (Harvard-Westlake School) and Keegan Potter (The Willows Community School) will lead small groups and model how to discuss art pieces in Latin, merging language use and cultural study.
